Prepositions

Learning Intention; To develop specific vocabulary and understanding relating to position.

From time to time, all the groups in Nursery experience these focussed sessions which aim to extend understanding and vocabulary relating to specific subsets of words.

Currently, the Seahorse group are looking at prepositions ( positional language relating to where an object is).
Each week concentrates on a particular preposition - in, on, under, next to, between and behind.

We like to introduce each new preposition in a very child-centered way; through the use of stories, or with a practical task such as putting a teddy in various places according to instructions.

Once understanding of a particular preposition is established, the children are then encouraged to select a preposition picture card.

Using full sentences, the children explain what is on the card.

e.g.               'The spider is in the dish'

Children are encouraged to take a full and active role in these sessions. Even sometimes taking on the role of 'teacher' and making decisions about which card to focus on. Here you can see a child using a 'magic hand', whilst the others say a special chant, to choose a card for all to describe.

This session is also used successfully for other subsets of words such as nouns and verbs.

  1. Thanks once again for the photos and explanation - Sophie hadn't mentioned this at all!! She knew exactly what the pictures were about when I showed her though :-)
