Show and Tell

We are introducing a new session in Nursery - 'Show and Tell'.

We ask that the children bring in something from home that they can talk about in front of a small group. The item may be a toy of special significance, a photograph of an important event or, indeed, anything else that the children can speak with confidence and knowledge about.

This session will be used to cover the following development statements from the new Early Years curriculum:

Communication and Language

Listening and attention 30-50 months

CL1• Listens to others one to one or in small groups, when conversation interests them.

CL2• Listens to stories with increasing attention and recall.

Speaking 30-50 months

CL10• Beginning to use more complex sentences to link thoughts (e.g. using and, because).

CL11• Can retell a simple past event in correct order (e.g. went down slide, hurt finger).

CL12• Uses talk to connect ideas, explain what is happening and anticipate what might happen next, recall and relive past experiences.

CL14• Uses a range of tenses (e.g. play, playing, will play, played).

CL15• Uses intonation, rhythm and phrasing to make the meaning clear to others.

CL16• Uses vocabulary focused on objects and people that are of particular importance to them.

CL17• Builds up vocabulary that reflects the breadth of their experiences.

Understanding the World

People and communities 30-50 months

UW1• Shows interest in the lives of people who are familiar to them.

UW2• Remembers and talks about significant events in their own experience.

UW3• Recognises and describes special times or events for family or friends.

Please look out for the yellow letters coming home to inform you when it is your child's turn.

Outdoor physical activities

We are very lucky at Gleadless Primary School to have such a large space for our Early Years outdoor provision. Although there are many more things that we hope to achieve outside in the future, here are just a few of the activities that we participate in that help to develop your child's physical abilities now...

Learning how to cycle on one of our large wheeled toys...

Balancing skills...

Building and constructing with our large construction and den building equipment...

Kicking and throwing both small and large apparatus...

We are loving our new tyres! Much fun has been had cleaning them up in preparation for the coming weeks. We are hoping to turn some of them into fairy gardens! The tyres will also be used to improve physical skills. We intend to use them for agility courses.

A great big THANK YOU to all the parents and relatives that have kindly donated items towards our outdoor provision. We rely on the generosity of you all to enhance the learning that goes on. Please keep an eye out for any items that may be of use next time you have a clear out!

Enhancing outdoor provision

As you know, in Foundation Stage we use the outdoor area almost every day to extend your child's learning. We like to support whatever is going on in the classrooms by experiencing activities on a larger scale.

There are many learning opportunities that we would like the children to experience, but we may need a little help from you to support this.

We are asking that mums, dads, grandparents, aunts, uncles etc bear us in mind if they are having a clear out of any of the following...

  • any old towels/blankets/covers etc that can be used for den building
  • a clothes horse or similar
  • any used tyres - we can use these to make miniature gardens or assault courses to develop physical abilities
  • wooden off cuts or other real life building materials for the children to build with
  • plumbing equipment such as pipes for water play
  • off cuts of guttering to make channels for water or balls to travel down
  • any spare gardening equipment you may have, especially child sized forks/trowels etc
  • extra garden planters and/or large containers for planting in
  • any decorative stones or pebbles left over from a garden project - even if it is just part of a bag
  • natural resources such as shells/pine cones/conkers/logs etc
  • ribbons/tinsel for weaving
  • any beads or buttons
Thankyou in anticipation.

Eight-legged antics...

The children seem to be enjoying learning about spiders...

This is Cynthia the Spider. She has left her babies all over our Nursery!

We attempted to make some 'Spider biscuits'.

This is what they were supposed to look like, if you had been wondering!

WE LOVE SPIDERS!
