Pirate's gold!

We have enjoyed yet another baking session today - making Pirate's gold!

When baking, we use a variety of important skills.
  • measuring
  • weighing
  • mixing
  • chopping
  • cutting
  • stirring
  • kneading

We also have discussions about the important role that food plays in keeping us fit and healthy.

This is a super way to get the children to try new or unusual foods.

Our Pirate's gold buns smelled delicious!

If you would like to have a go at making these for yourselves, here is the recipe.

Ingredients:
  • 50g butter or margarine
  • 50g clear honey
  • 50g medium oatmeal
  • 50g chopped ready-to-eat dried apricots
  • 1tbsp dried banana chips
  • 50-75g cornflakes
Method:
  1. Place the butter or margarine and honey in small saucepan and warm over a low heat, stirring. (We cheated and used a microwave - high for about 50 seconds)
  2. Add the oatmeal, apricots, banana chips and cornflakes and mix well.
  3. Spoon the mixture into 12 paper cases, piling it up roughly. Transfer to a baking sheet or tray and chill until set and firm.

Feel free to adapt this recipe and simply use what you have in the cupboard - try peanuts, pecans, dates, raisins or simply anything that you really love. Enjoy!
